BYOD once again comes to the rescue of a hard drive in distress. I had lost nearly a TB of important data when my HDD had become completely unreadable. Noel took a look, and even though it required some extra special work, he was able to recover everything! Given the state of the hard drive damage, BYOD gave me a great deal as well! Noel continues to live up to his reputation as one of the best in SoCal. Friendly service, very thorough, real professionals. Thanks, BYOD!

Clean. Precise. Professional. Recommended. The services provided exceeded expectations.

Noel is the best in L.A. This is my second time doing business with him. My Laptop bit the dust and he was kind enough to not only be honest about my hard drive being damaged and not worth repairing,

6 Hands-On Center Ideas for Using Technology in Pre-K and Kindergarten

Joaquina Erdmann

Adding technology to a preschool or kindergarten classroom is always a little bit tricky. You have to walk a fine line. On one hand, we know that when delivered in the right fashion, technology instruction can be beneficial for young children. On the other hand, we want to be certain that we aren’t just adding unnecessary screen time to the lives of kids who may already be spending far too much time on devices and watching TV. Here are six ways you can add technology to your early childhood classroom that encourage free play and problem solving.

1. Recycle Old Tech in Your Play Center

You know that flip phone that’s been in your drawer forever? Now’s the time to break it out! Put out a call to friends and parents for outdated (but safe—for example, with batteries removed) technology. In our classroom, we have a basket of old electronics

Welcome – UC Postharvest Technology Center

Joaquina Erdmann

The Center was founded in 1978 by Adel Kader with the goal of organizing and coordinating knowledge transfer regarding reduction of postharvest losses and improving the quality and marketability of fresh horticultural products. The research findings disseminated during this era by Kader and a cadre of colleagues is the cornerstone and foundation for our current year-round supply and global sourcing of quality fresh and minimally-processed produce and cut flowers.

Our mission today is to remain a leading source of information on quality, safety and marketability of fresh produce and to sustain the viability of the Center for the next generation of scientists and practitioners. Our immediate goal is to broaden the level of involvement among our basic, applied and extension faculty and use the PTC platform to distill, translate, and disseminate emerging technology advancements to a broader industry and affiliated stakeholder audience.

DOJ Responds to EPIC FOIA on Location Data

In response to EPIC’s Freedom of Information Act request to the Justice Department for information about the use of location data, including cell phone records, to counter the pandemic the DOJ wrote there are no “responsive records.” EPIC had asked for “all legal memos, analysis, communications, and guidance documents, in the possession of the Department of Justice, concerning the collection or use of GPS data and cell phone location data for public health surveillance.” The DOJ forwarded EPIC’s request to its Office of Legal Counsel to see if responsive records exist in that office. EPIC will continue to seek information about the DOJ’s views on the use of location data, and particularly phone records. After 9-11, the Justice Department supported the warrantless surveillance of Americans, a program that was later terminated after the New York Times broke the story, and EPIC pursued

These files contain Excel 4 macros (checking with oledump.py here):

There are a lot of cells in this spreadsheet with a call to the CHAR function:

These CHAR formulas evaluate to ASCII characters, that are then concatenated together and evaluated as formulas:

I can extract the integer argument of each CHAR function like this with my tool re-search.py:

That can then be converted to characters using my tool numbers-to-string.py:

The string above is build-up of all the cells with function CHAR in the spreadsheet. That’s why the produced string looks promising, but the characters don’t seem to be in the right order.

Selecting characters on the same row doesn’t help:

But selecting by column does reveal the formulas:

Analyzing obfuscated Excel 4 macros with a command-line tool like this can be
