Shopping for High-Speed Internet Service

You can get high-speed internet access through a variety of services, including:

  • digital subscriber line (DSL)
  • cable
  • fiber optic
  • satellite
  • wireless

When you’re shopping for internet service, it helps to understand the differences and know what questions to ask.

Types of High-Speed Internet Service

The type of internet service available to you depends on what technology your local providers offer:

  • Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) transmit data through phone lines without interfering with telephone service. Local phone companies typically offer DSL service, but other internet service providers offer it as well.
  • Cable modems provide access to the internet through cable lines without interfering with your cable TV service; cable companies provide this service.
  • Fiber optic service provides internet, phone, and TV services delivered simultaneously through one fiber optic line.
  • Satellite internet service is available in most areas from providers of satellite television services. Extreme weather conditions can disrupt service.

Internet History Timeline: ARPANET to the World Wide Web

Credit for the initial concept that developed into the World Wide Web is typically given to Leonard Kleinrock. In 1961, he wrote about ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet, in a paper entitled “Information Flow in Large Communication Nets.” Kleinrock, along with other innnovators such as J.C.R. Licklider, the first director of the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO), provided the backbone for the ubiquitous stream of emails, media, Facebook postings and tweets that are now shared online every day. Here, then, is a brief history of the Internet:

The precursor to the Internet was jumpstarted in the early days of computing history, in 1969 with the U.S. Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). ARPA-funded researchers developed many of the protocols used for Internet communication today. This timeline offers a brief history of the Internet’s evolution:

1965: Two computers at MIT Lincoln Lab communicate with one another using packet-switching

These files contain Excel 4 macros (checking with oledump.py here):

There are a lot of cells in this spreadsheet with a call to the CHAR function:

These CHAR formulas evaluate to ASCII characters, that are then concatenated together and evaluated as formulas:

I can extract the integer argument of each CHAR function like this with my tool re-search.py:

That can then be converted to characters using my tool numbers-to-string.py:

The string above is build-up of all the cells with function CHAR in the spreadsheet. That’s why the produced string looks promising, but the characters don’t seem to be in the right order.

Selecting characters on the same row doesn’t help:

But selecting by column does reveal the formulas:

Analyzing obfuscated Excel 4 macros with a command-line tool like this can be

What is Internet Marketing? Your Guide to Today’s Online Marketing

Internet marketing is the most inexpensive way to reach your target market, regardless of the size of your business.

But what is internet marketing, really?

Defining Internet Marketing

Also called online marketing, internet marketing is the process of promoting a business or brand and its products or services over the internet using tools that help drive traffic, leads, and sales.

Internet marketing a pretty broad term that encompasses a range of marketing tactics and strategies – including content, email, search, paid media, and more.

These days, though, internet marketing is often used interchangeably with “content marketing.”

Why?

Because content marketing is the internet marketing of the present and future.

Content Marketing Institute defines content marketing as:

“A strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”
